Greatness, I know, maybe it sounds a bit pretentious as a word. Actually, I was striving to find something inspiring, something great to write about. Then, there it was: greatness.
I spent the last days thinking about what greatness really is.
What the real meaning could be or the real implications.
I walked among people, observed more than usual. But still, it was hard to define it.
So, I have decided to ask to Dr Google for an help!
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the possible meanings of the word Greatness could be:
1-exceptionally high quality
2-the quality or state of being large in size
According to Wikipedia, Greatness is related to:
"a concept of a state of superiority affecting a person or object. Greatness can also be referred to individuals who possess a natural ability to be better than all others. The concept carries the implication that the particular person or object, when compared to others of a similar type, has clear advantage over others. As a descriptive term it is most often applied to a person or their work, and may be qualified or unqualified."
As Wikipedia pointed out, sometimes the word great or greatness has been used as an attribute. For instance, we had Alexander the Great, Peter the Great, Carolus Magnus.
However, greatness should be synonim of Excellence.
What to do then, to be considered as great? Should we be hero? Should we do something amazing in order to astonish everybody?
Dorothy Height said "Greatness is not measured by what a man or woman accomplishes, but by the opposition he or she has overcome to reach his goals."
Sometimes we have many dreams, but we think we don't have the chance to make them come true.
Well, a friend of mine has an amazing story. We met when we were about fourteen years old. He has always loved music, and in a small town like the one we were living in, the maximum achievement for someone with a good talent and limited possibility was being a Dj to random parties. We lost contacts for ages, since we met few months ago, and I found out he just realized his dream, or he made a step forward. He worked on the music for a movie, and I have seen that light in his eyes. Greatness. Sometimes great is how you look, a good achievement, but I think it is more related to who you are. Then, what you do in order to truly express who you are?
Be the best you can be, in everything you do. Then, you won't find greatness in a compliment, in a word, in a smile... but inside of you.
